Objective

·        To foster an appreciation of and responsibility for the unique aspects of local natural, built and cultural environment.

Strategy

·        Promote introduction of environmental management practices and standards.

·        Reduce environmental impacts arising from enterprise/community development.

·        Identify and audit key components of local environmental quality.

·        Promote landscape management and land use policy.

·        Manage, develop and promote local cultural environmental and heritage resources.

·        Develop the Eco-labelling concept as the core development driver in the Lee Valley.

·        Use financial development supports as a means of achieving conservation and environmental objectives.

·        Use local heritage and culture to foster pride in local landscape and farming traditions.

·        Recognition of environmental quality as aid to economic development.

·        Restoration of key components of local environment and landscape ( dry stone walling, paint finishes, hedging, etc)

Indicative Actions

-          Introduce environmental auditing and monitoring for Fuchsia Brand participants

-          Identify threats to the local environment arising from economic growth/prosperity

-          Develop a community greening initiative to enhance landscaping, commercial and residential premises, signage, litter and recycling

-          Devise and deliver an ecology programme for primary schools

-          Develop “Eco-counselling” service to provide information resource and mentor facility for local enterprise and communities

-          Develop a conservation strategy to assist the preservation of habitats, streetscapes, vistas and local architectural integrity

-          Link development incentives to quality criteria in the preservation and enhancement of the local environment

-          Establish demonstration projects relating to sustainable building design and  conservation.

-          Document the key features, buildings, structures and landscapes that confer the regions unique identity.

-          Develop “pocket parks”,( green/sedentary or hard/active) using incidental parcels of open space created through development of new roads, housing, industrial development, derelict sites, etc

-          Promote landscape and heritage restoration by developing the region’s local industrial heritage such as railways, creameries, mills, mines, quarries etc. for visitor/community/amenity use.

-          Promote a road/landscape enhancement initiative through selective planting of broadleaf and wildflower species.

-          Develop a landscape/woodland gallery as interface between natural environment and local artistic tradition

-          Number of habitats or landscapes enhanced or preserved

-          Number of enterprises meeting defined environmental standards

-          Number/proportion of individuals, enterprises and community bodies assisted through formal eco-counselling

-          Number/Proportion of development projects /initiatives containing environmental dimension

-          Number of buildings/structures developed from demonstration models and sustainable designs

-          Number of development initiatives assisted in sourcing of alternative public/private funding
